{"id":5595,"date":"2023-07-17T17:31:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-17T17:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diskdrive33.com\/mks\/?p=5595"},"modified":"2023-07-18T11:47:27","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T11:47:27","slug":"fcpa-blog-uk-government-offers-amnesty-to-tax-evaders-named-in-pandora-papers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diskdrive33.com\/mks\/2023\/07\/17\/fcpa-blog-uk-government-offers-amnesty-to-tax-evaders-named-in-pandora-papers\/","title":{"rendered":"FCPA BLOG | UK government offers amnesty to tax evaders named in Pandora Papers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Our Head of Investigations looks at moves by the UK tax authority to encourage &#8216;Pandora Papers&#8217; tax evaders to come clean<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The UK tax authority HMRC is offering a\u00a0<\/span>tax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/hmrc-gives-offshore-customers-chance-to-come-clean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amnesty<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to UK residents featured in 2021\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icij.org\/investigations\/pandora-papers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pandora Papers<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0disclosures, the revelations produced by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the time, the huge leak of 11.9 million documents revealed the offshore accounts of 35 world leaders, including current and former presidents, prime ministers, heads of state, and more than 100 billionaires, celebrities, and business leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The letters HMRC is sending out are described as \u201cnudge letters,\u201d intended to incentivize those who may have underreported their tax position, offering them a chance to make a full declaration within 30 days of receipt.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Those who do not fully cooperate or fail to come forward face 200% penalties and potential jail time: it\u2019s a heady incentive to come clean.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I believe HMRC\u2019s approach is sensible, given the circumstances. But let\u2019s be clear: investigating UK national tax evaders using offshore companies and trusts to a criminal standard will be a resource-heavy undertaking and likely take many years.
